US PGA - BMH STUDENT ATHLETE PROGRAMME

“Concentration comes out of a combination of confidence and hunger.”

Arnold Palmer

Holistic development is an important aspect of the education we provide at Bromsgrove School Mission Hills.

Our co-curricular programme is growing all the time, especially in golf where we now have BMH PGA Ascenders and Student Athlete Programmes which provide a Pathway to golfing excellence and University Placements with Golf Scholarships.

The US PGA - BMH Student Athlete Programme has now completed its first year with student athletes making great progress in golf and academics with golf averages of 2.5 below par and Cambridge IGCSE exam assessments on track for As in the 6 subjects they are studying at Cambridge IGCSE.

After one year, we are delighted our student, Tony Xiong, now qualifies in the Chinese National Golf Team and is one of the best golfers in China. Furthermore, we are equally in awe of Kevin Wu, who joined our programme this year and recently won the Buick Golf Championship. Both Tony and Kevin are absolute student ambassadors with straight As in the Cambridge IGCSEs so far and golf averages below 2 under par.

  • Our Aims

The US PGA - BMH Student Athlete Programme's mission is to nurture golfing talent and provide a pathway to Golf Scholarships and University placements for students intent on a career as professional golfers.

  • How to Achieve?

Student athletes are coached by world class PGA golf coaches from 8am to 12 noon Monday to Thursday and 12 noon to 4pm on Fridays. All aspects of a student athlete's golf are worked on as well as the related aspects of fitness, nutrition and their mental approach. It really is world class coaching. All of the first batch of student athletes have made great progress this year in their golf.

The academic programme is intense and entails studying English, Chinese, Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to Cambridge IGCSE level from 1pm to 6pm daily Monday to Thursday followed by supervised study, revision lessons, drama and sports sessions from 6:30pm to 9pm.

Typically student athletes sit their 6 Cambridge IGCSEs in June after 2 years of study on the programme.

For the next 2 years on the programme student athletes complete 3 or 4 Cambridge A' levels in subjects of their choosing. During these 2 years they also work on their college placement with PGA and BMH experts ensuring they are building the content of their character and a strong resume for College application. SAT preparation, interview practice and support with applications and essays are provided every step of the way to ensure success.

  • The Faculty

On the golf side, PGA Director of Golf Mr Kevin Smeltz who is the only coach in Asia that is on the Golf Magazine Top 100 list, leads a team of fully qualified and experienced PGA golf coaches who ensure student athletes focus on the processes necessary to nurture excellence in golf.

On the academic side, Dr Charles Wall, Head of Senior School at Bromsgrove School Mission Hills, leads a team of well qualified and experienced expatriate and bilingual teachers to ensure student athletes secure excellent Cambridge IGCSE grades and thereafter A level and SAT scores. All teachers on the programme have recognized teaching qualifications as well as bachelor degrees and in most cases masters too.

  • Entry Requirements

If you are interested in becoming a PGA BMH Student Athlete then you should first approach PGA who will assess your ability and potential in golf. If you pass this part of the entry requirement then PGA will invite you to apply to BMH for a place on the student athlete programme. From the school side, we assess your English, Chinese and Maths to establish what time line is most realistic for your completion of Cambridge IGCSEs and A Levels. You will be offered a place on the programme if PGA and BMH both agree you have the necessary aptitude and attitude for success on the programme.

  • PGA BMH Student Athlete Highlights

We have completed our first very successful year of our PGA BMH Student Athlete Programme. On this programme 10 PGA BMH student athletes ranging from 12 to 17 years old spend half of their day playing golf with PGA expert coaches and the other half studying 6 Cambridge IGCSEs with BMH teachers. Progress has been excellent with the students on track to secure IGCSEs next summer, SATs a year later and Cambridge A levels and US Golf Scholarships and College placements by the summer of 2023.

We are particularly proud to have Tony Xiong on our programme who is now in the Chinese National Golf Team and one of the best golfers in China. Furthermore, we are equally in awe of Kevin Wu, who joined our programme this year and recently won the Buick Golf Championship. As mentioned above, both Tony and Kevin are absolute student ambassadors with straight As in the Cambridge IGCSEs so far and golf averages below 2 under par. They are an inspiration to our pipeline of current and future student athletes.
